It was a day dominated by the state’s best AA teams, as all four squads from the North Division were winners during the opening day of the state tournament in Cheyenne.
Game one saw the Casper Oilers hammer the Cheyenne Hawks–the JV squad for Cheyenne Post 6–22-4. Oilers manager Bobby Schoonover says that things played out for his club exactly the way he had hoped for. Casper moves on in the winner’s bracket to play Gillette.
The Roughriders snuck past the top-seed from the South Division, beating the Wheatland Lobos 8-7. Gillette manager Nate Perleberg is expecting another close game with Oilers today, and knows they are a good offensive baseball club.
On the other side of the bracket, it was Sheridan routing Jackson 17-2. Troopers manager Ben Phillips says that they got the pitching and defense they needed to get past the Giants. So that sets up a matchup with Cheyenne Post 6 in today’s winner’s bracket.
Post six had no problems with Archie Hay Post 24 from Rock Springs, winning 17-0. Pitcher Lincoln Trujillo struck out 13 batters in the no-hitter. On to the game with Sheridan today, as the Troopers are the only team from Wyoming that has beaten Post 6 this year, doing so with pitcher Drew Adrieans on the mound back in May. He will be there again tonight, and Post 6 manager Tagg Lain expects a competitive game.
