The AA and A State American Legion baseball tournaments begin today (Wednesday). The AA tourney will be in Gillette, while the A championships will be played at Cowboy Field in Laramie.
Just five teams will be in the AA bracket that will follow a double elimination format. And with just a five-team bracket, a team doesn’t have to be as deep at pitcher now, something that has plagued programs in the past. Gillette manager Nate Perleberg says that opens the tournament up a lot more.
Over the last several years, with the exception of last season, it’s been Cheyenne Post 6 and Gillette meeting for the state championship, both in the winner’s bracket final and the subsequent title game. The last time Post 6 didn’t win a championship over the last 13 years, was in 2008, coincidentally in Gillette, and Perleberg is hoping for a repeat of that special weekend.
Post 6 has won the last five AA state titles, and 12 of the last 13. Taking a look at the matchups:
Jackson vs. Sheridan–7 pm
Cheyenne Post 6 vs. Casper Oilers–4 pm
Gillette vs. Jackson/Sheridan winner–7 pm
Rain has postponed the start of the A State Tournament in Laramie. Play was set to begin today at Cowboy Field, but over two inches of rain have soaked the areas around home plate. Action will be pushed back a day and now start Thursday morning. Taking a look at the schedule:
Douglas Cats vs. Archie Hay Post 24 (Rock Springs)–9 am
Riverton Raiders vs. Cody Cubs–12 pm
Casper Drillers vs. Green River Knights–3 pm
Laramie Rangers vs. Powell Pioneers–7 pm
