I do have friends I don’t hunt with, and I get along quite well with them. But this time of year, I sort of lose track of those folks. It’s not that I suddenly don’t like them, it’s just that when fall rolls around, I can’t stop thinking about hunting.
Some of the friends I don’t hunt with do hunt, but we’ve never gotten together to hunt with each other. We do fine when we get together. We talk about hunts we’ve been on, and we can stay up regaling each other with stories of grand adventures until the wee hours of the morning. And of course the friends I do hunt with and I have the hunts to share, and we often stay up talking around the fire after those hunts. Oddly enough, when my friends and I are talking after a hunting trip, we talk about things that happened back in civilization, and not about the hunts themselves more often than not.
I tend to neglect my non-hunting friends this time of year. If you’re one of those friends, please don’t feel that I think any less of you. I just have my mind on hunting this time of year.
But it all makes me wonder what people who don’t hunt talk about when they get together. I suppose there are sports, but there’s only so much you can say about a football game or a basketball game, right? And golf, wow. I mean, wouldn’t you run out of things to talk about pretty quickly? “He hit the ball, and it went a couple hundred yards, then he found it and hit it again.” Maybe there’s more to it than I’m seeing.
Of course, they probably wonder the same thing about me. I suppose everyone has something they really get into. I guess that’s what makes us all unique and interesting – the different things we care about. Go make some memories the way you like to make them.
