Light bars are for off-road use, bright guy

Some guy who lives out near me must have gotten a set of light bars for his pickup for Christmas. Now he uses them every night, and it’s driving me crazy.

If you have those five-million candlepower light bars on your truck, like the guy I meet on my way home from work every single night, do the rest of us a favor and keep them turned off when you’re on the paved roads. Or even the county roads. They’re made for off-roading, not for cruising down the highway.

Yes, they light up the countryside so you can avoid hitting deer, elk or other wildlife as you’re driving, but they also blind everyone coming toward you. And yes, I’m happy for you that you were able to buy such cool gadgets for your truck, but showing them off on Wyoming Highway 30 at 11:30 at night, when I’m coming the other way, doesn’t impress me.

I’d like to get some for my own truck. I would love to have a bar above my windshield, as well as another bar down on the top of my front bumper. Possibly even a couple smaller sets below the bumper, so I could undercut fog banks and improve my visibility when the clouds drop down to ground level. I’d also put another bar on the back of the cab facing backward, and maybe augment my reverse lights with a couple rear-facing square sets.

But with that light bar-equipped truck always meeting me on my way home from work each night, I’ve decided to add a few others to the wish list. I’d get some of the most powerful versions I can find and mount them above and below each of my rear-view mirrors, too. Then, when I meet someone coming toward me with those bars lit up, I’d flip on all of my own light bars, and maybe even pull out my handheld spotlight, too, and give him back everything he’s throwing, plus a hefty dose of interest.

My goal is to have enough LED lights to burn the shadow of his truck into the pavement behind him. Maybe that’ll get that guy to only use his lights off road.
