As though missing the first several weeks of turkey season due to eye surgery wasn’t bad enough, now I have to go back for the other eye so I can completely tank the entire season.
It’s not major surgery, but it’s necessary. My eyes both have little holes in the retinas, which can become retinal detatchments if they aren’t treated. It’s not a huge risk if you’re a normal person and keep from bonking your head into stuff, but hitting your head is apparently one of the biggest risk factors for detaching a retina. Since I bonk my head roughly once a day on parked cars, moving cars, arena fences, rodeo livestock, rodeo pick-up horses, and the occasional conk from my golden retriever, I really need to get the second eye shored up quickly.
And the good news is that the eye surgeon doesn’t think the second eye will take as long to heal up as the first one did. He said he’d never seen a retina with that many holes that wasn’t already detached when he did my left eye, but the right eye is in much better shape. I’m glad, because it took about two weeks to fully recover from all that lasering on the left eye. Maybe I’ll still get a chance to get out and chase some turkeys when I get my peepers all fixed up and healed.
I wish I could have scheduled both surgeries for earlier in the year, or been able to wait until after the spring turkey and bear seasons are over. I hate missing valid hunting days, especially when it involves pain and anguish – and of course, the layout of a bunch of money for a medical procedure.
I’d much rather spend that money on hunting gear, ammo, licenses and the like, and spend that time shivering my butt off in the woods while a freezing rain or even snow completely soaks me to the skin.
Hopefully I heal up quick so I can shake off these surgeries with a turkey hunt.
