University of Wyoming head basketball coach Allen Edwards announced Friday that Nyaires (Ny-air-ees) ‘Ny’ Redding will transfer to UW from Washington State University. He will sit out the 2016-17 season to fulfill NCAA transfer rules, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Redding is the step-son of Wyoming assistant coach Jermaine Kimbrough. He will be a walk-on for the Cowboys after being on scholarship at Washington State.
“We are extremely excited to have Nyaires (Redding) join the program with his experience playing in the Pac-12 Conference,” Kimbrough said. “He brings leadership and experience to the team both on the floor and in the locker-room.”
Redding comes to the Cowboys after playing two seasons at Washington State. The 6-2, 166-pound guard averaged 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in 60 games with 22 starts. Last season, Redding averaged 1.2 points and 1.0 rebound appearing in 29 games averaging 12 minutes per game.
“He was a great student in the classroom and really developed as a basketball player during his time at Washington State,” Kimbrough said. “He will have a year to develop under coach Allen Edwards and our system.”
During his freshman season, he appeared in all 31 games averaging 4.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. He also dished out 101 assists on the season averaging 3.3 per contest to rank second on the team and 13th in the Pac-12 Conference. Redding averaged 19.4 minutes per game and shot 40 percent (36-of-90) from the field. He also set a WSU freshman single-season record in free throw percentage at 80 percent (49-of-61).
“He can distribute the ball to the right players at the right time,” Kimbrough said.
Prior to Washington State, he played at Westwind Prep in Phoenix, Ariz. Redding averaged 29.8 points, 2.1 steals and 8.7 assists per game, while shooting 53 percent from the field and 89 percent from the free throw line during his senior season. He was named First Team All-State, tournament MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as being named the team’s captain. Redding compiled five 40-point games in his senior year at Westwind Prep.
