University of Wyoming President Laurie Nichols says the college may have to eliminate more faculty and staff positions in order to cover cuts in state aid.

Nichols told the UW Board of Trustees on Wednesday that plans to save money by having faculty spend more time teaching and offering early retirement and separation may not meet original expectations.

Nichols says she may have to eliminate more vacant faculty and staff positions to compensate. She says the university may be able to identify as many as 85 vacant positions, up from the 70 estimated last month.

The university is forced to make cuts because of a loss of more than $40 million in state aid.

Nichols says other aspects of her budget cutting plans are meeting or exceeding expectations.
