The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team went through quite the ordeal last week, on their road trip to Las Vegas and then Albuquerque. Not only did they lose a tough four-set match at UNLV last Thursday, but they were robbed while in Las Vegas. One of the team vans was broken into while the Cowgirls were at a team dinner. Sets of keys, ID’s, equipment and other various items were taken from the van. Head coach Chad Calihan says he’s never been through anything like that before, “We lost all of our wallets and car keys. We had come straight from practice, so the girls in our van lost their shoes, their knee pads and their braces.”
Calihan added, “It was just a weird day. One of our assistants isn’t at practice because she is filing a practice report. Another assistant and I are at Dick’s Sports Goods, 45 minutes before practice, trying to find new shoes and ankle braces and things for the kids.”
Calihan didn’t use the robbery as an excuse for the four-set loss, but said his team responded well for what they went through. “This is a good group, and I don’t know if it had any bearing on match-time with UNLV. They played a great match, and I don’t want to take anything away from their effort. But for everything that happened on that road trip, to get out of there with a split, and feel like we played pretty well against a good New Mexico team, I think that says a lot about this group.”
The Cowgirls are back in action Thursday evening as they host San Diego State at 6:30 pm.
