Distance yourself in the wilderness

With the requirement to distance ourselves socially, I can’t think of a better way to do that than to get away from it all for a few days deep in the backcountry.

We’re supposed to be staying at least six feet away from anyone who is not already living in our houses. That can be difficult to do if we have to go to the store have other things we have to do in town. So I say just get out of town and get even further away from everybody else.

You might have to wait out some wintery weather. We got some snow down here in Cheyenne on Easter, but my mom sent me a picture of the piles of snow on their deck in Riverton. The backcountry’s going to be even more snowy, so if you do decide to get away from it all, be sure you layer up. And probably take the snowshoes.

When the weather starts getting better, this is a great opportunity to go find some new favorite places. You could venture out every weekend and never set foot on the same ground twice. There are plenty of wild places in Wyoming, where you won’t run the risk of bumping into anyone else. Just go about a quarter of a mile off any road, and you’ll be all alone.

Explore some of that scenery and look for opportunities to do the things you like to do. If you just like to hike, find some new trails. If you hunt, look for sign of the critters you like to hunt. Take along some maps and mark the places you think might be good to come back to. When all this COVID-19 stuff finally blows over, and it will, you can go back to those places and maybe even take some friends along with you.

Staying cooped up isn’t healthy. Right now, neither is mingling with strangers. So get outside, explore some new country, and let the fresh air recharge your batteries.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and hang in there.
