Consider a dry-fire trainer as a gift this year

I don’t want to offend all the Thanksgiving lovers out there, who get angry if you mention Christmas before turkey day has come and gone, but I do want to plant a gift idea in your head before it’s too late.

Talking about Christmas gift ideas before Thanksgiving is always dicey. There are a lot of people who don’t like anything being mentioned about Christmas before Thanksgiving, and they’re a vocal bunch. But please don’t take this as me ignoring Thanksgiving and skipping straight to Christmas – I just want to make sure you have time to get all the gifts you want to give others before it becomes a last-minute emergency.

That was my disclaimer. I hope I can now continue without fear of being attacked by the Thanksgiving Preservation League.

A few years ago, I got the Strikeman dry fire training system for my boys. It’s a great way to practice shooting when you can’t get to the range, or it’s too cold and nasty outside. It uses a laser cartridge and your phone to show you where you’re hitting, and it’s easy to use and helps you work on your shooting fundamentals. And with ammo prices still high, it’s a great way to practice without going broke. The basic system is 100 bucks, and it comes with the target stand, the phone mount and one cartridge. You can get extra cartridges for a variety of calibers for another $60. They also now have the Pro system, which gives you a more tactical shooting scenario.

There are other dry fire shooting systems available, too. I’ve heard great things about the Mantis system, and there’s another one called LaserHIT. Take a look and see which one you like the best.

And if you’re one of the people still planning to give me an earful for talking about Christmas gifts before Thanksgiving, be aware you need to order these early. They take a while to ship, so if you wait too long, they’ll be New Years presents instead of Christmas gifts.
