For the first time this season, Wyoming tennis player Tessa van Der Ploeg has been selected the Mountain West Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. It’s the second honor of her career and the first Cowgirl since Magdalena Stencel won the award on March 28, 2018.
van Der Ploeg, a senior from Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, went 4-2 overall last week helping the Cowgirls to a 6-0 win over Oral Roberts on Friday, a 7-0 victory against Louisiana Tech and a 7-0 loss against the 22nd ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday. She won in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, against Gorana Kadijevic of ORU and defeated Sonia Chen of Louisiana Tech, 6-2, 7-5. She and Elisa Koonik beat Balcazar and Antonijevic, 7-5, and Perez-Lopez and Nutz, but dropped a tough one, 6-0, against the 4th ranked team of Okalova and Ploner of Tulsa.
She is currently 8-8 overall in singles play and 2-1 this spring. In doubles action, she has a 7-9 mark. van Der Ploeg is currently ranked seventh all-time in doubles victories with 58 and 17th in singles wins with 55.
The Cowgirls are currently 2-1 to begin the spring season. Wyoming returns to action on Sunday against the ninth ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT in Stillwater.
