Wyoming tennis student-athlete Sophie Zehender has been named this week’s Mountain West Female Tennis Athlete of the Week after she helped the Cowgirls to a come-from-behind victory over Creighton last Saturday.
Zehender picked up a pair of wins against the Bluejays, winning at both No. 2 doubles and singles. Zehender clinched the victory for UW at No. 2 singles, breaking a 3-3 tie in the match, as her match against Sarah Wilcox was the final to complete. Zehender defeated Wilcox in three sets, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-3.
Zehender, along with doubles partner Ana Fernandez, was Wyoming’s lone win during the doubles portion of play as they defeated Creighton’s Alex Centra and Joanna Nowakowska, 7-6 (7-5). The win moved the team of Fernandez and Zehender to 5-1 on the season thus far.
The rest of the Cowgirls and Zehender return to action this Saturday with a trip to Northern Arizona for a 10 a.m., match.
