Cowgirl swimmer Claire Becker and diver Melissa Mirafuentes have been named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week for February 1-February 14. It’s the first career honor for Becker while it’s the third time this season and sixth overall for Mirafuentes.
Mirafuentes, a sophomore from Guadalupe, Mexico, swept all three boards at the Air Force Invite two weekends ago. In the 1-meter and 3-meter, she led from wire to wire in the prelims and finals. She finished the 1-meter with a score of 295.90 and completed the victory with a score of 295.85. In the 3-meter, she recorded a season-best score of 326.65 over 20 points better than Lexi Mills of Utah. Followed that up with a score of 319.70 in the finals to finish atop the podium.
She closed the weekend on the platform with a third place score of 210.60 in the prelims. Mirafuentes responded with a season-best score of 246.50 to collect her third place finish. She has now finished first on the 1 and 3-meter in duals against CSU, Air Force, Hawaii, UNLV and the Air Force Invite.
Becker, a sophomore from Missoula, Montana, had a solid two-day meet at the First Chance Meet in Denver. She finished the 1650 freestyle in a career-best time of 18:13.29 for a fourth place finish. Earlier in the meet, she went a season-best time of 4:43.05 in the 400 IM to touch the wall in fifth place. On Saturday, she went 5:17.99 for another solid performance in the 500 freestyle.
Up next, the Cowgirl swimming and diving teams are scheduled to compete in the 2021 Mountain West Championships. The swimmers will begin the four-day event on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas, Nev. The divers will be back in Colorado Springs, on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Cadet Natatorium.
