After a strong weekend that included an individual title at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Wyoming 285-pound senior Tanner Harms was named the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week. It is the first time in his career Harms has garnered the award and he marks the second Cowboy to earn the honor this season after Bryce Meredith earned the award on Nov. 24. Harms was one of three Cowboys to earn individual titles in Reno over the weekend.
Harms tallied a 5-0 record en route to the Reno Tournament of Champions title, taking down two ranked foes in the process. Victories over grapplers from Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Utah Valley landed the 285-pounder in a semi-finals match against No. 18 Nathan Bulter of Stanford. A 4-3 decision over Bulter propelled Harms into the finals against Illinois’ No. 15 Brooks Black. The Greenwood Village, Colorado native tallied a hard-fought 4-1 victory to win the championship.
In a dual against No. 7 Oklahoma State, Harms put up a valiant effort against the No. 4 rated wrestler in his weight class in Oklahoma State’s Austin Marsden. Harms earned two escapes in the third period, but a takedown by Marsden in the third period proved to be the winner in a 5-3 decision. Harms sits at 10-2 on the season and has 51 career victories in his career at Wyoming.
