He Was Once in Their Shoes, So He Knows What It’s Like

Wyoming linebacker Shae Suiaunoa isn’t that far removed from being a guy that’s trying to get in the playing rotation. He didn’t play much–if any–his first three years with the Pokes. But all of that changed the last two seasons. As the Cowboys gear up for the second half of spring ball, Suiaunoa says it’s been a good first seven practices for them.

“It’s honestly been a lot of fun,” said Suiaunoa. “The guys that have left, and the new guys stepping up, it’s fun and exciting to so those new guys stepping up, and just seeing them fly around. We’re out there playing football again, so it’s fun.”

Suiaunoa was second on the team last year in tackes, with 93. The season before, he made a significant impact with the Pokes, collecting 73 tackles, but left a lot out there, as he led the team in missed tackles. He used that offseason to get better, and it definitely showed in 2023. As far as building depth at the linebacker spot, he says he was in their shoes a few years ago, so when he sees them down, he tries to build them back up.

“My first three years, I barely played, maybe five snaps.” Suiaunoa added, “So patience, keeping my head down and working were the main keys for me. If I see any younger guys with their head down, or a sad face, I talk to them and let them know that I’ve been in your position and you’re not the only one, so just keep on going.”

Wyoming continues with spring practice today (Thursday) in Laramie. Saturday’s practice will again be open to the public, and it will start at 10:15 a.m., inside War Memorial Stadium.
