It didn’t take some members of the 117th Congress long to start trying to find ways to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to have guns. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee from Texas introduced House Resolution 127 on Jan. 4. This bill would place extreme regulations on law-abiding gun owners if it were to pass.
I can’t imagine it will make it into law, though, even with the current makeup of the House and Senate. There are too many career politicians who have to answer to their constituencies, and this bill would cause too much disruption for gun owners of either political party. But it has been introduced, and it is currently referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary.
I don’t have time to get into all the ridiculous rules this bill would introduce, but here is a quick summary. It would require anyone who wants to own a gun to apply for and be issued a license. To get that license, you’d have to pass a psychological evaluation, which would include interviews with your former spouse. There’s a lot more to that licensing, but that’s the tricky bit.
All firearms would have to be registered, too. And that registry, which would include the serial numbers, calibers, and descriptions of your guns, would also include your address and where you store those guns. And that registry would be available to the public.
And there’s more. It would ban most semi-automatic guns. Oh, and I forgot to mention, that license I talked about earlier would cost $800.
Let our Congressional delegation know how you feel about this bill. And urge your friends in other states to do the same for their senators and representatives. I doubt this bill will get far, but we need to nip it in the bud. Now.
