I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for 20 years

My wife and I took a trip to four East Coast cities last week to do some early celebrating for our 25th wedding anniversary. Our anniversary isn’t actually until the end of May, but we needed to go last week because that’s when spring break was for the young lady who watches our critters when we’re out of town.

The thing is, in all the scrambling to get ready for the trip, I overlooked another anniversary. April 1st was the 20th anniversary of this radio show. It’s kind of hard to believe I’ve been doing this show every weekday for 20 years now.

That’s a grand total of 5,200 shows. They’re only two minutes of content, but that adds up to 10,400 minutes, or 173 hours and 20 minutes. It’s amazing to me that you good people would subject yourselves to hearing me talk that much.

I’m grateful that you do, though. It gives me a great excuse to get outside and gather more fodder for upcoming stories. In this rat-race world where it seems like nothing ever slows down, it’s sometimes easy to make excuses why we can’t get out into the wilds as often as we should. But there’s research that shows that we need to connect with nature more often in order to keep ourselves sane when we’re not able to.

That’s especially true for kids. There are a number of books out there that explain the research they’ve done to determine that kids who don’t get time in nature – whether it’s out in the wilderness, in a park in their town, or even just in their own back yards – have higher instances of ADHD and other ailments. Just a few minutes outside each day drastically reduce that.

So thanks for letting me talk about the outdoors for 20 years. I hope over those years it has inspired you to get out and do some exploring of your own.
