Whether you’re ready for it or not, Christmas is coming tomorrow. If you’ve been a good boy or girl and got your shopping done early, take today off from the hustle and bustle. Grab the shotgun, throw the dekes in the truck, and go get a fresh Christmas goose. It might be a great day to go. Not everyone will be able to get away on Christmas Eve. Families come to town and there are parties to go to, not to mention the last-minute preparations.
I’d bet lunch you could just about take your pick of a place to throw out the decoys at any public hunting area today. And I’ll bet even more that I won’t be hunkered down in your favorite spot. I have some commitments today.
The late flights of geese are still coming down from the north in big bunches, so you’ve got the makings of a great day for hunting. If the family’s in town, take ‘em along. Forget the neighborhood party this year. Go get that goose.
If you can’t get away today, chances are you won’t be able to go tomorrow, either. That’s an even better day for hunting, if avoiding the crowds is important to you.
But if your marriage and family mean a lot to you, it’d probably be better if you didn’t even bring up the idea of hunting on Christmas Day. Trust me. I spent the last week of ought-two on the couch after I made that suggestion.
There’s always Saturday. There may be a lot more people out on the weekend than there will be today and tomorrow, but you can put the call you’ll hopefully get in your stocking to use. Get a feel for that new shotgun. Try out the waders you got from your uncle.
No matter what you do over the next few days, whether you get to go hunting or not, keep the reason for the season in mind. Here’s wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas.
