Mead Calls For More Cuts To U.W. Budget

AP 5-12,2016

Gov. Matt Mead says the University of Wyoming needs to cut $35 million from its two-year budget because of falling state energy revenues.

Mead says the cut is on top of nearly $6 million the Legislature cut from the state’s only public, four-year university during the legislative session earlier this year.

Mead delivered the grim message to the UW Board of Trustees meeting in Laramie on Wednesday afternoon.

The governor says his office is also discussing cuts in other state agencies, including the Department of Health and Corrections, but the UW figure is the first one he has settled on.

Mead says additional cuts may be necessary if the state’s budget crisis worsens.
