The Northwest College Board of Trustees has approved eliminating the journalism, broadcasting and farrier programs at the college in Powell.
Trustees also voted to accept 17 early retirement applications and approved eliminating four classified or professional staff positions. The number of faculty jobs is not being reduced.
The Powell Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1XliI3t) that the actions on Monday were taken to cut expenses.
Officials say the cost-cutting measures and other actions have reduced the college’s expenses by $2.6 million.
But additional reductions could bring the total up to $3.9 million.
Journalism professors at the college had said they worried the recommendation to eliminate the journalism program was in response to critical articles recently published in the student newspaper. But college officials denied any connection.
