Laramie County Sheriff’s Department 2-6, 2016
On February 5, 2016, at approximately 2130 hours, deputies from the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Round-Up Motel.
Deputies were responding to the motel based on information received from the Westminster Police Department in Colorado. The individual the Westminster Police Department was attempting to locate was considered a suspect in the disappearance of a Westminster resident. The individual was also wanted on a warrant for a pawn violation. The Wheat Ridge Police Department was also pursuing a warrant for the individual for attempted murder. He was alleged to be in a stolen black 2007 Nissan Frontier.
The vehicle was located at the Round-Up Motel. When deputies attempted to make contact with the male, gunshots were fired from inside the motel room. One of those shots grazed the hand of a deputy who was treated and released at CRMC.
The subject barricaded himself inside the motel room. The Cheyenne Police Department/Laramie County Sheriff’s Department’s combined SWAT team responded along with the Crisis Negotiations Unit. The CNU team was able to establish contact with the male inside the room. He alleged he had a female hostage and explosives. The male was telling law enforcement the female was duct taped and being held in the bathroom. He threatened to blow up the motel room. Negotiations continued for several hours but the man refused to come out of the room.
Just after 023o hours on February 6, the man cut off all communications and would no longer accept calls from the negotiator. Tear gas was deployed into the motel room. The SWAT team entered the room and the male was found deceased from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was alone in the room; no female or explosives were found in the room.
Once the scene was rendered safe, the investigation was turned over to the Department of Criminal Investigation.
The name of the deceased individual will be withheld pending notification of family. No gunshots were fired by law enforcement at any time.
