An interim legislative committee plans to consider a proposal to raise state vehicle registration fees to pay for a new computer system at the Wyoming highway department.
The Legislature’s Joint Transportation, Highways and Military Affairs Interim Committee plans to discuss the proposal Aug. 25 at its meeting in Riverton.
Under the draft proposal, registration fees would be increased by $10 for five years.
The additional revenue would be used to upgrade the state’s computer system that is used to manage vehicle titles and registration, identification cards, concealed carry permits, driver’s licenses and driving records.
Tom Loftin of the Wyoming Department of Transportation tells the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that the new system is expected to cost $30 million to $50 million.
The current computer system dates back to 1986.
