OK, let me just get this out of the way: Time just seems to go faster the older I get. There. I said it. Now I’ve officially crossed into middle age. Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I can get on with what’s left of my life.
No, seriously, the years do seem to go by faster all the time. I think it has a lot to do with all the stuff we’ve learned, the things we’ve done, and most of all, the cool things we still want to do. It’s amazing how for every experience you cross off your list, five or six others take its place.
That’s what this time of year has traditionally stood for. The end of an old year and the beginning of a new one marks a chance for new beginnings. Yeah, we’ve all set resolutions that we’ve broken within the first few weeks of the new year, or even the first few days. I can only think of one resolution I’ve made that ever got anywhere, though I’m still kinda’ proud of that one. When I knocked 80 pounds off my frame a couple years ago, it made it a whole lot easier to get out in the field and chase critters. If that’s the only one I ever keep, I guess I can be happy with it.
But I’d still like to do some cool stuff this coming year. I don’t know if I’d go so far as to call these resolutions, but I suppose they’re goals, anyway.
I plan to get my sons out to the archery range this year and get them going with bows and arrows. I need to do a little more practice myself, too.
I’ll do a little better job of getting the boys out to the streams and rivers to do some fishing, too. While we’re at it, maybe I can complete my Cutt-Slam this year.
But above all else, I really, really want to finally get an elk this year. I might even go so far as to put the bow down and give it a try with a rifle, just to increase my chances. And you can bet I won’t be picky about coming home with the biggest bull on the mountain. I’ll be content with a cow. Just as long as it’s an elk.
Well, anyway, Happy New Year to you. I hope this one’s good to you.
