A huge bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln that sits atop a column near Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie is about to undergo restoration.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation says crews will remove the sculpture Wednesday morning. A truck then will carry the 3.5-ton bust to Eagle Bronze Foundry in Lander.

There, workers plan to blast the sculpture with tiny glass beads. Two coats of lacquer and two coats of hardener will follow.

The process should take about two weeks.

The sculpture has been at a rest stop at the highest point on I-80 since 1959 and last was cleaned in 1992.
