Today’s post is an open letter to the auto industry. I think I speak on behalf of all sportspeople when I say we don’t want Cybertrucks.
We might be willing to give electric trucks a look, as long as you can give us trucks that can do the things we do with our internal combustion models now. We want full-size trucks with full-size beds. We want four-wheel-drive with low-range capability, not all-wheel-drive. If you can put all that into an electric package, we’ll give it a go. If you can’t, get back to the drawing board.
The thing is, if it’s done right, an electric truck could actually outperform a gas-powered rig. You can get a heck of a lot of torque out of those electric motors, and if you’ve got a motor sitting on each of the wheels, you could redefine positive traction. Put some aggressive mud slinging tires on that truck, with those electric torque factories driving them, and you could climb trees with that thing.
But there’s got to be a full-size frame option. Yes, some folks like the smaller trucks for getting around off the pavement, but a lot of us use our trucks to haul all sorts of gear out to the sticks – wall tents, tent stoves, horse trailers loaded with pack horses, and stuff like that. We can’t do that with a Rivian, and we certainly can’t do that with a Cybertruck.
And even if we’re not pulling a gooseneck horse trailer, we still need the full-size bed for our gear, and if we end up bringing an elk out of the woods with us, we need a place to put it. You’re not going to get that into the stupid rolltop briefcase or the “frunk” on the Cybertruck.
Give us real trucks that can haul our gear to the woods, not get stuck, and can get us home without having to recharge with a portable generator. Keep your gimmicks and fancy self-driving features. Give us what we really want.
