I’ve been missing out on some great hunting opportunities over the last three months, because I’ve been stuck inside doing various carpentry projects. We’re replacing all the trim in our house, and I’m building all that trim myself, in addition to installing it. On top of that, a friend of ours is working on fixing up his house so he can sell it, and I’ve been drafted into helping him with his woodwork.
So nearly every weekend for the majority of the hunting seasons this past fall and winter, I’ve either been cooped up in my shop or over at Tom’s house, building stuff instead of being out in the woods or wetlands, hunting critters.
But last weekend, I once again took my compound miter saw over to Tom’s place. I had a couple of errands to run on the way, and while I was in a home improvement store, some extremely thoughtful individual took that saw out of the bed of my truck.
Without that saw, I can’t get the trim done in my house or do the work Tom needs done in his. My homeowner’s policy has a thousand-dollar deductible, so there’s no sense claiming the loss, but I can’t afford to buy a new one. Contrary to what the thief might have thought, I don’t have seven hundred bucks just lying around.
So thanks to that anonymous humanitarian, my weekends are now free to hunt. But as selfless as that thief was, he had horrible timing. Only geese and small game are still open, other than predators. If someone’s going to steal my saw, you’d think they’d at least have the decency to take it at the beginning of the hunting season, instead of at the end.
For that reason, I hope that saw causes the thief as much misery as it caused me.
