I shouldn’t complain about the wind. I’m a Wyoming native, for crying out loud, but I’m starting to sound like one of those people who move here, stay for a winter, then flee for more temperate climes.
In my defense, I’ve heard a lot more complaining about wind from many other Wyoming natives this year than I’ve ever heard before. I think we’ve had the worst wind season we’ve ever had. And it started early. Usually, we don’t get a lot of wind through the summer, but that hasn’t been the case this year. It blew all last winter, continued through the spring (though that’s always expected), but then didn’t die down over the summer. So by the time the usual wind season started again in the fall, most of us were already pretty tired of it.
But now it’s kicked up a notch. We’ve had 100+ mile-per-hour gusts recorded all over the state, and the sustained wind speeds have been in the upper 20s or even 30s more than I can remember. It makes it hard to enjoy a day outside.
That’s not to say you can’t go out. Most of us just deal with it. We just bundle up a little more, and maybe even break out the ski goggles so we don’t get our eyes sandblasted out of our heads. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much call to use those ski goggles for actual skiing, because in addition to having horrible winds, we’re also dealing with a lack of snow. Most of the ski areas were late opening this year.
But maybe the wind’s just getting it all out of its system, and it’ll die down soon. And with any luck, the snow is just gathering up for a big push sometime in the next few weeks. It’d sure be nice to get some snow, and it would be a big bonus if it’s not falling sideways.
