The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team was picked to finish seventh with 57 points in the preseason Mountain West Coaches’ Poll as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches, the conference announced on Thursday.
Boise State and San Diego State each earned 106 total points to tie for first in the poll. The Broncos received seven first place votes and the Aztecs garnered three. The two teams tied for the regular season title and met in the championship game with Boise State coming out on top. New Mexico, who got a first place vote, was picked third in the voting with 97 points. Fresno State finished fourth with 78 points followed by San Jose State with 74 points. Colorado State was selected sixth with 73 points and had one first-place nod. The Cowgirls were seventh with 57 points while Colorado College came in eighth with 53. UNLV, Utah State and Air Force were ninth, tenth and 11th, while Nevada was 12th.
Wyoming returns nine starters and 17 letterwinners from last season’s squad that went 7-7-5 overall and 4-5-2 in the Mountain West. In all, the squad consists of four seniors, five juniors, ten sophomores and ten freshmen. Entering his ninth season at the helm, head coach Pete Cuadrado has an overall record of 73-62-24 during his tenure at UW and a 40-33-10 mark in league play.
Several individuals will be looked upon to contribute during the 2021 campaign, including sophomore Jamie Tatum. She finished her first season of play with 54 shots, six goals and two game winning goals on her way to being selected to the MW All-Newcomer Team. Junior Indiana Asimus started in all 19 matches while adding six goals on 29 shots plus 13 points. In goal will be junior Hannah Lee, she had a 1.39 goals against average and 59 saves in 1,058 minutes.
The Cowgirls will open up the regular season with a two-game homestand on Friday, March 5 against the Utah State Aggies followed by the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday, March 7. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. MT Wyoming will hit a two-match road stretch with a match-up against the Air Force Falcons, on Friday, March 12, and the Colorado College Tigers, on Sunday, March 14.
