Wyoming sophomore defender Kimmy Burbank scored a pair of goals to pull the University of Wyoming women’s soccer team past Kansas 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Wyoming remains undefeated on the season with a record of 3-0-3. The Cowgirls have also won nine straight matches at home dating back to 2013.
“It’s great to get a win against a great program like Kansas,” Cowgirl head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “Anytime we get an opponent at home, we have a chance against anybody.”
Burbank scored her first header in the eighth minute of the game. The assist came from a corner kick by sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri. After half-time, the Cowgirls continued to put pressure on the Jayhawks. Burbank got her second goal of the match with another header, this time off a penalty kick by junior Sammi Dunda in the 57th minute. Burbank now has three goals on the season.
“Kimmy has always been dangerous in the air,” Cuadrado added. “She has had a lot of chances. The last few games she has started to click. Everybody was active on the deadballs, when we do that good things happen.”
Quickly after Burbank’s second tally, Jayhawk Liana Salazar dribbled the ball down the pitch and scored an unassisted goal from the top left corner of the goalie box in the 64th minute. UW’s defense held strong as they fended off 14 shots from the Jayhawks in the second half.
Wyoming accumulated four corner kicks and four saves on the afternoon. The Jayhawks outshot the Cowgirls 21-12 in the match. Each team recorded six shots on goal. Goalkeepers Georgia Rowntree and Cassidy Entsminger shared time in the net with Rowntree playing the first stanza and Entsminger playing the second. The only saves for the Cowgirls came from Entminger, in the second half.
UW will travel to Cheyenne to face Northern Colorado in an outreach game on September 15th. The match will be played at East High School and is set for a 7 p.m. MT start.
