Deadly Flu Season In Wyoming

A.P.-4-14,2015

The Wyoming Department of Health reports 26 deaths have been linked to influenza across the state since October.

That is well above the average of 6.5 flu related deaths a year since the 2000-2001 flu season.

State health department surveillance epidemiologist Reggie McClinton says influenza A was the predominant virus.

The median age of Wyoming’s reported influenza-associated deaths for this season was 75, with nearly two-thirds of deaths occurring in individuals over 65. One young child also died.

The state health department has received reports of nearly 5,000 Wyoming cases of influenza for the season so far.

State epidemiologist Dr. Tracy Murphy says while the agency continues to receive reports of some flu cases, the activity seems to be winding down in Wyoming.
