Don’t let anyone talk you into voting for a specific person. Do your own research, listen to what the candidates have to say, and make up your own mind. That’s what this country was built on, and what made America great in the first place.
Wyoming’s primary election is Aug. 18. That means you have four weeks to do that research and figure out who you want to vote for. Some of the candidates have been in public office before, so you can look up their voting records on topics that are important to you. If you look into those voting records, be sure to check out the details. For instance, a few years ago one candidate distorted the voting records of one of his competitors. If you had been watching the legislature or read the record afterward, you’d know the competitor voted against bills initially, then worked to improve the bills so they would hold up to legal scrutiny, then voted for the improved bills on later introductions.
Listen to what the candidates have to say themselves on issues like gun rights, hunting and outdoor access, public lands, and other topics you care about. Ignore what the candidates say about each other. These days, anything they say about their competition tends to be a distortion, misinformation, or outright lies. If they can’t state their own stances on topics, or if you don’t agree with their stance on that topic, don’t vote for them.
There’s a lot at stake in every election. The people we elect will decide the laws that govern us for the next two years. Changing laws is always difficult, so their actions may last longer than they remain in office. Make educated choices and elect the right people for those offices on Aug. 18.
