CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead is meeting with industry and government officials in Japan on the first leg of an economic development tour that will also take him to India, Germany and England.

Kari Gray is chief of staff for Mead. Gray says the governor’s office isn’t releasing details of his travel plans in advance for security reasons.

Mead met Monday in Japan with officers of the Sumitomo Corporation and of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization to discuss the future of the coal industry. He also has met with a Japanese government official.

Mead has been an advocate for exporting coal from Wyoming to Asian markets but the state hasn’t yet secured access to ports in the Northwest.

Mead is set to return to Wyoming on Oct. 30.
