IRS Warns of Scam

Phone scammers pretending to be IRS agents have conned a Wyoming resident out of more than $20,000.  Karen Connelly, spokesperson for the IRS, says they have seen a surge in these aggressive phone scammers. They call to demand immediate payment of tax debts by phone.

According to the IRS, the phone scammers have been successful ten times in the state, ranking Wyoming 47th out of the 50 states, costing taxpayers over $26,000.

Connelly says the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without first mailing out a bill. She adds that the IRS does not demand payment without giving a person an opportunity to appeal.
