Put a little precision in your shooting

I always thought I was a pretty good shot with a rifle, but then my sons came along. They both have different shooting styles, and both are different than mine, but both are also much better than I am.

I’ve never been a very good shot with a handgun, I’ll freely admit that. But I’ve always considered myself an above-average marksman with a rifle. Maybe that’s just my male ego talking. I know there are a whole lot of people who shoot better than I do. But I’ve always thought I would probably land above the 50 percent line if we all got together and tested our aim.

But then I had kids. They both outshot me from nearly the first time I took them to the range. And then they both got even better. Colby, the oldest, enlisted in the National Guard and got some very good instruction in combat shooting from his drill instructors at Basic Training, then more when he got back to Wyoming and started drilling with the Guard.

But Logan, the youngest, is even better, at least in terms of precision. He’s been involved in precision air gun shooting for a number of years, and he can put every shot through the same hole with nothing but peep sights to aim through. Colby’s shooting isn’t as precise, but he doesn’t miss, either. His targets are bigger, but his range is longer and his follow-up shots come quicker. If I ever get in a situation where I have to fight my way out, I hope I have both of them with me, armed and ready.

In an effort to be at least competitive with them, I’ve started precision shooting, too. And I’m amazed at the difference it has made with my hunting shooting. Even though the stance is different, the rifle is different, and the range is different, the fundamentals are the same. It all comes down to having a good platform, controlling your breathing and heart rate, and squeezing the trigger just right.

If you want to improve your shooting, join a precision shooting league. You may not be the best on the team, but your shooting will improve dramatically.
