TU Looking to Get Off to a Good Start

by Keith Kelley–1 Sep ’22

Last season, Tulsa struggled to start the year. The Golden Hurricane got off to a 1-4 start, losing to a nationally-ranked FCS squad, along with losses to Oklahoma State and Ohio State. But, T-U finished strong, winning six of their last eight games, including their bowl game. Tulsa’s schedule isn’t quite as daunting to start off this season. They open up with Wyoming Saturday afternoon, followed by non-conference games with Northern Illinois, Jacksonville State and Ole Miss. Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery isn’t putting any pressure on his team to win right off the bat.

“Hey, this is game one and we do want to get off to a good start. All of our attention and focus now, from a practice standpoint, obviously we’re still getting one’s and two’s work early in practice. The second half of the practice is all generated toward our first opponent in Wyoming,” said Montgomery. “Being able to do that part of it gives guys an opportunity to still work some good-on-good situations, but also really put our focus to where it needs to be, which is the emphasis on Wyoming. We know how well we’re going to have to play up there.”

The Wyoming Cowboys host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at War Memorial Stadium is set for 1:30 pm.
